New York City has publicly released information on owners of luxury second homes as part of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s push to raise taxes on the wealthy and stabilize housing prices.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Mamdani administration recently posted online data on about 960,000 second homes with market values of at least $5 million, including owners’ names, addresses and estimated values. The city said the properties account for roughly one-quarter of all homes in New York City.
The list includes properties tied to prominent figures in business, politics and entertainment, including a roughly $37 million home managed by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick as trustee, a home owned by Mary Trump, a home owned by Jennica Paulson, and properties linked to filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. The publication also noted that about a dozen units in a luxury condominium once occupied by Ivanka Trump, her husband and Michael Cohen were included.
On X, Mamdani warned on the 23rd that anyone who owns a second home in New York City worth more than $5 million should check their mailbox when they return to the city. The proposal is part of a “pied-à-terre” tax, an annual surcharge on nonresidents who own luxury homes in the city but do not live there full time. The city says the measure could generate at least $500 million a year in revenue.
