Former Korea Football Association chairman Jung Mong-gyu and former national team coach Hong Myung-bo apologized Wednesday at a National Assembly hearing over Korea soccer issues and the team’s disappointing World Cup results.
Jung said he had tried his best to develop Korean soccer during his tenure but regretted “a series of controversies” and the team’s underwhelming performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. He said he felt deeply responsible as KFA chairman and was sorry for failing to live up to the expectations of fans and the public.
After stepping down as chairman, Jung said he plans to focus on business and contribute to society. He also said he would listen carefully to lawmakers’ views and answer questions sincerely during the hearing.
Hong said he was sorry that the national team did not meet public expectations in the 2026 World Cup and said he accepted responsibility for failing to repay the trust and support people had shown. He added that he would speak honestly about what he knows and the responsibilities he owes, and said he felt sorry to the players who had worked hard under him.
