Elon Musk is reportedly weighing a major restructuring move at Tesla as the company considers a possible merger with SpaceX. The Wall Street Journal reported that Tesla is exploring whether to separate its China business into a standalone unit or sell it, although the plan remains in an early stage.[1][10]

According to the Journal, advisers have discussed several options, including a spin-off, a sale or even a shutdown of the China business. The reported goal is to reduce regulatory and geopolitical risk, including concerns about Chinese customer data, dual-use technology and possible scrutiny from the Chinese government.[1][7][11]

The China business has become increasingly important because China is Tesla’s biggest electric-vehicle market and one of its key supply-chain bases. Reports say Tesla executives have been told to prepare for a possible separation of the business if merger talks with SpaceX advance.[2][11][15]

Musk has publicly denied the report, calling it “absurd fake news” and saying the matter had never been discussed.[1][3][12] SpaceX’s growing role in U.S. defense-related projects has also intensified attention on any potential combination between the two companies.[7]
