A broken 8-inch cast-iron water main flooded the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Lindenhurst Avenue in Los Angeles’ Beverly Grove neighborhood early Saturday, temporarily closing the stretch between Lindenhurst and Orlando avenues and cutting off water service to about 10 nearby homes and businesses.
The rupture happened at 4:48 a.m., and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said repairs were expected to be completed around 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The break came just two blocks from another water main failure on San Vicente Boulevard in June, at about the 500 block, making this the second rupture on the same road in two months.
LADWP said the cause of the latest break was still under investigation. The utility has faced criticism over repeated water main breaks, and has said its system averages three to four breaks a day, which it considers normal.
The latest incident adds to a growing list of major water main breaks across Los Angeles in recent weeks, including a large rupture in West Hollywood that drew criticism over the city’s aging infrastructure and repair response.
