The Justice Department has sharply expanded efforts to strip citizenship from naturalized Americans, filing denaturalization lawsuits against 25 people from 17 countries between July 20 and Aug. 3. That marks the largest number of such cases filed in a single period on record.[1][2]
The pace has accelerated quickly. The 25 cases surpassed the department’s June total of 17, and the Trump administration has now brought 123 denaturalization cases since taking office, with a goal of reaching at least 250 by October.[2][3]
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the crackdown is only beginning, underscoring the administration’s intent to make denaturalization a higher-priority enforcement tool.[2] Denaturalization is a legal process used when authorities later determine that a person obtained citizenship through fraud or false statements, including by hiding identity, criminal history or immigration records during the green card or naturalization process.[2][3]
The effort has raised concern in immigrant communities because it can reach people who became citizens decades ago if prosecutors later prove serious misrepresentations. In practice, a successful case can lead to the loss of citizenship, permanent resident status and possible deportation proceedings.[2][3]
