Google has sharply reorganized its artificial intelligence leadership, shifting Demis Hassabis from CEO of Google DeepMind to chairman and chief scientist while giving technical chief Koray Kavukcuoglu broader oversight of AI model development. The move comes as concerns grow that Google is falling behind in the AI race.[1][2]
Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist and one of its most influential AI figures, is leaving after 27 years to co-found a new startup called Discovery Loop. He is joining with colleagues Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, all of whom are widely recognized for major contributions to Google’s research efforts.[1][2]
The leadership shake-up follows a series of high-profile departures and moves across the AI industry, including researchers associated with Google’s transformer work and AlphaFold. Google’s latest frontier model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, has not yet been released, and investors reacted negatively to the changes, sending Alphabet shares down about 4% after the announcement.[1]
CEO Sundar Pichai said Google must keep moving quickly with a clear purpose and that the company’s goal remains to stay at the frontier of AI.[1]
