The State Department says it has revoked more than 175,000 foreign visas under the Trump administration, with most cases tied to crimes including assault, DUI, theft, sex offenses and other offenses. The department announced the figure in a news release on Monday local time.
Among the examples cited, officials said they canceled more than 100 visas at a U.S. embassy in North Africa in cases linked to so-called “birth tourism,” where foreign nationals sought U.S. citizenship for their children. The State Department also said a Kuwaiti national was ordered removed for foreign-policy reasons after allegedly inciting violence against the U.S. president and calling Americans enemies.
The department said visa revocations also included some Iranian and Cuban nationals tied to their home governments, as well as foreign nationals who made political comments related to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Foreign nationals who violently resisted arrest were also included on the revocation list.
The Trump administration has been tightening immigration enforcement and making it harder for some foreigners to remain in the United States. After the Supreme Court blocked a ban on birthright citizenship, the administration recently took steps to curb birth tourism by expanding rules that exclude some cases from citizenship eligibility.
