The U.S. national debt has reached a warning level as federal borrowing continues to outpace tax revenue. According to the Treasury Department, the debt stands at about $39.6 trillion, and the federal deficit for the first nine months of this fiscal year has reached roughly $1.37 trillion.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk warned in a podcast earlier this year that without productivity gains from artificial intelligence and robotics, the United States could face national default. He also said interest costs on the debt have already exceeded the Pentagon’s $1 trillion defense budget.

The debt burden has been rising alongside war spending, including costs tied to the Iran war. The Pentagon says spending so far has reached about $37.5 billion, while public policy experts estimate the final bill could ultimately exceed $1 trillion.

Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio warned that the U.S. is entering a cycle of borrowing more money just to pay interest on existing debt. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon also expressed concern that a bond-market crisis could follow if fiscal problems are not resolved. The Minneapolis Federal Reserve says the purchasing power of $100 is now equivalent to only about $12 in 1970 dollars.
