Korean Air and Asiana Airlines have formally approved their merger, moving the deal into its final stage ahead of the planned launch of a combined carrier on Dec. 17.[9] The two airlines said they want to use the merger’s expected synergies to deliver safer, more seamless premium service to customers.[9]
Korean Air’s board approved the merger on Aug. 12, and Asiana Airlines’ shareholders backed the merger agreement the same day with 99.3% approval among those who attended the meeting.[9] The companies said they will complete the remaining creditor-protection procedures and finish the merger registration on Dec. 17.[9]
The combined airline is expected to bring together the two carriers’ infrastructure, networks and operating know-how, creating greater efficiency in route operations and a more extensive, stable service system across flight operations, cabin service, passenger service and cargo.[9] The companies also said they have begun operating as a “One Team” from day one to prepare for the new airline.[9]
That preparation has included job training for Asiana passenger and cargo staff, as well as joint emergency evacuation demonstrations involving crews from both airlines to verify safety procedures.[9] A Korean Air official said the company would complete the remaining steps without disruption and seek to raise the standing of South Korea’s aviation industry while offering upgraded service to passengers.[9]
