A student was arrested Wednesday at Santee High School in Los Angeles after school police found a gun during an administrative search on LAUSD’s first day of classes. The school is located on Maple Avenue in South Los Angeles.
According to the Los Angeles School Police Department, the search was conducted after a dispute between students, and officers discovered that one student was armed. The student was taken into custody at the scene, and the guardians of the students involved were notified.
The school was briefly placed on lockdown, or restricted access, before the order was lifted around 10:45 a.m., and students returned to normal classes.
In a statement, school police said students should not bring firearms or any items that could be mistaken for dangerous objects onto campus. The department said student and campus safety is its top priority and urged parents to speak with their children about avoiding risky behavior and making sound decisions.
