A U.S. armored brigade was effectively wiped out in a training exercise in Germany after facing a Ukrainian drone unit, according to a Wall Street Journal report cited by Korean media.[1][3]
The exercise took place in April and May at the U.S. Army’s Combined Resolve training event in Germany, where about 3,500 troops from the 1st Cavalry Division’s 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team took part.[1][3] The brigade advanced with electronic warfare and counterdrone gear, but Ukrainian reconnaissance drones detected the force quickly, and loitering munitions and attack drones then destroyed vehicles at such a pace that units marked as destroyed had to be put back into the exercise so training could continue.[1][3]
The result was a stark reminder of how vulnerable moving armored forces can be to drones, especially when dust from heavy vehicles makes them easier to spot from the air.[3] The report also said the exercise highlighted how the U.S. military, despite spending heavily on counterdrone technology and special units, still faces serious challenges adapting to drone warfare.[1][2]
The Ukrainian drone unit involved has also been successful in training against other NATO forces, including Britain and Sweden, according to the report.[1][2] U.S. military officials are now expanding efforts to study Ukrainian drone tactics and are considering direct purchases of proven Ukrainian drones, the report said.[1][2]
