A fight over a planned data center in Pittsburg, California, has escalated into a broader clash over jobs, development and community impact. The North Coast States Carpenters Union has accused opponents of the 76-acre AVAIO Perseus data center of hurling racist and homophobic slurs at union members during a recent public hearing.
The union filed a formal complaint with the Pittsburg City Council on Aug. 12, asking the city to investigate the reported abuse and strengthen safety measures at public meetings. In its complaint, the union said about 25 members attended the Aug. 3 hearing to support the project and that Black and Latino workers were targeted with insults, including the N-word, accusations of betrayal and references to the Ku Klux Klan.
Union President Jay Bradshaw said the incident went beyond a normal dispute over development and amounted to racial intimidation in a public forum. Pittsburg officials have been considering the AVAIO project on the former Delta View Golf Course site, and the project has drawn strong opposition from local residents who say a large data center could bring noise and diesel exhaust to the area.
The controversy reflects a wider debate playing out in many U.S. communities over whether data centers bring enough economic benefit to offset environmental and neighborhood concerns. In Pittsburg, the dispute has now moved beyond land use and into questions of civility, public safety and race at city hall.
