President Donald Trump said Saturday that New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be preparing to run for president in 2028, while arguing that progressive Democrats are retreating from past positions on crime and immigration.

Speaking during a visit to Long Island, Trump said he thought Ocasio-Cortez could be thinking about a White House bid. He also said Democrats were trying to distance themselves from earlier comments about crime and so-called sanctuary cities, a term for local policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Trump called sanctuary city policies a “disaster” and said they would soon begin to end. His comments came after Ocasio-Cortez recently described her own past “Woke 1” activism in 2019 and 2020 as “crazy” during a broadcast interview.

Ocasio-Cortez has continued to defend sanctuary city policies as a safeguard against what she says is excessive federal immigration enforcement. She has not ruled out a 2028 run, but has said her current focus is helping Democrats win this November’s midterm elections.
