Tesla is moving ahead with another major manufacturing project, this time a proposed $10.1 billion solar cell factory in Texas. The filing comes after reports of a separate semiconductor project tied to Elon Musk’s broader push into large-scale industrial investment.
According to Tesla’s application, the project is called Project Crystal Sun and would be built in Fort Bend County, in the Houston area. The company is seeking a 10-year property tax break, a common step in the U.S. when large companies negotiate incentives with state and local governments before finalizing a site.
The filing says the plant could employ 9,712 full-time workers once fully operational and create up to 1,147 construction jobs by 2028. Commercial production is targeted for the first quarter of 2029. Tesla has not finalized the site, and the application also says the company is considering an unnamed backup location outside Texas.
The solar plant report is the latest in a series of large-scale manufacturing plans linked to Musk. Tesla is still weighing incentives and locations, which means the Texas project is not yet a done deal.
