Parole has been approved for Yumi Sun, who is serving time for the 2017 killing of her husband in Los Angeles Koreatown.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Sun was found eligible at a parole suitability hearing held June 3. She was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 16 years to life, with a minimum of 16 years required before she would normally be considered for parole.
The ruling opens the door to possible release sooner than expected, even though Sun has not yet served nine full years in prison. Officials appear to have viewed her conduct in custody favorably during the review.
Parole eligibility does not mean immediate release. Final steps remain, including review by the governor. The case stems from the early morning of July 31, 2017, when Sun’s husband, Tae Kyung Sung, then 31, was found stabbed to death in an apartment in Koreatown. Prosecutors said Sun, who was intoxicated, argued with her husband before the killing, while her defense maintained she had no memory of the incident and suggested the possibility of an outside intruder.
