An 81-year-old woman lost both of her legs after an SUV crashed into an outdoor dining area at Los Cinco Puntos in Boyle Heights on July 7, according to reports. The victim, identified as Cristina Vargas, was eating lunch with her daughter, Gabriela Vargas, and a male friend after visiting a relative nearby.
Surveillance video obtained by KTLA showed the SUV suddenly losing control and plowing onto the sidewalk, striking the three people seated outside. Gabriela Vargas told KTLA she heard a screeching sound, then saw the headlights and bumper before the crash. She said she later realized she had been thrown into the air.
Cristina Vargas suffered the most serious injuries and ultimately had both legs amputated. Gabriela Vargas was also injured, including a head wound and a deep cut to her knee. All three were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Family and friends have started a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical costs and recovery. Police said the SUV driver was believed to have been impaired.
