Google has begun updating its maps to reflect President Donald Trump’s order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, according to CBS News. The change is being applied differently depending on where users access the service.
In the United States, Google Maps will show only Lake America. In Canada, the map will continue to display Lake Ontario. For users elsewhere in the world, Google said the lake will appear as Lake Ontario (Lake America), with the U.S. name placed in parentheses.
Google said the change follows its long-standing policy for bodies of water whose names vary by country and that the update is being rolled out gradually. The company also said it is reflecting a formal change in the federal Geographic Names Information System, or GNIS, the official U.S. government database of place names.
The move comes amid a broader trade dispute between the United States and Canada, where both sides have imposed steep tariffs on each other’s goods. The naming dispute adds another layer to tensions already running high between the two countries.
