Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born Minnesota congresswoman whose life story has been celebrated as a symbol of American opportunity, is facing renewed scrutiny as Donald Trump returns to office. A recent video revisited long-running controversies surrounding Omar and said critics are now urging a Justice Department investigation.
The claims center on four main issues. One involves questions about Omar’s 2009 marriage, with critics alleging inconsistencies between a reported common-law relationship and the date of a legal marriage. Those allegations have circulated for years, but they have not been conclusively proven.
Another issue involves campaign finance violations. Minnesota’s Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board previously said Omar’s campaign violated rules, ordered about $3,469 returned and imposed a $500 civil penalty. Questions also were raised about tax filings, including claims that she and a partner filed joint returns before they were legally married. Omar’s office has said the matter was later corrected.
The video also cited allegations tied to the election process, including so-called ballot harvesting claims. Those accusations, based on some videos and testimony, did not result in criminal charges or a conviction. The broader controversy reflects how Omar remains a frequent target in national political fights, even as supporters point to her rise from a refugee camp in Kenya to the U.S. House.
