South Korea said Friday that no decision has been made on sending forces to the Strait of Hormuz, after Foreign Minister Cho Hyun spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at Tehran’s request.

According to South Korea’s Foreign Ministry, the two officials discussed recent developments in the Middle East and bilateral ties. Cho said South Korea has consistently supported free and safe navigation for all ships in the strait and has joined international efforts to protect maritime security. He also urged Iran to help ensure the safety of South Koreans living abroad.

The call came as Seoul is reviewing whether to contribute to security efforts in the region, prompting criticism inside Iran. Iranian lawmakers have warned that any South Korean involvement could create new problems, reflecting growing resistance to the idea.

The foreign ministry said Cho and Araghchi agreed to keep communicating on issues between the two countries.
