President Donald Trump signaled he wants to keep the current U.S. push to accelerate artificial intelligence development, even as concerns grow in the tech industry about the risks of moving too fast. Speaking to reporters Sunday at his Doonbeg golf course in Ireland, Trump said, "I want to keep this approach" because "whoever wins in the AI race is the winner."
Trump said the United States is ahead of China in AI and argued that the country can still add safeguards. He dismissed criticism from those calling for a slowdown, saying there are too many negative voices highlighting problems that he believes will not happen.
His comments came after recent warnings from researchers at Anthropic and Google who raised alarms that AI could escape human control, prompting industry leaders including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to call for a slower pace of development. Trump’s remarks suggested his administration will continue backing rapid AI advancement despite those concerns.
At the same time, former President Barack Obama is pushing Democrats to make AI a major political issue. The New York Times reported that Obama urged party leaders at a private fundraising event in Manhattan on Thursday to focus on how to respond to AI, underscoring how the technology is becoming a partisan and policy issue in Washington.
