California families helping parents with Medi-Cal coverage should review assets well before July 2027. The state’s Department of Health Care Services says the current asset limit for one person is $130,000, with an additional $65,000 allowed for each extra household member, through June 30, 2027.
Starting July 1, 2027, that limit drops to $21,000 for one person and $31,000 for two people, with an additional $1,550 allowed for each extra household member. The change amounts to an 84% cut. The asset test applies to people age 65 and older, people with disabilities and those who need long-term care.
California suspended the asset test for two years in 2024 and 2025, then restored it on Jan. 1, 2026. Families already enrolled in Medi-Cal will still have to report assets when they renew coverage each year, so households should check their renewal month and review any county notices carefully.
Assets that count can include cash, bank deposits, investment accounts, non-primary real estate and a second vehicle. The home a person lives in is not counted, along with one vehicle and some other exempt items under state rules.
