A serious crash in Chatsworth left three people dead and several others injured Tuesday evening after an SUV struck the side of a Metro bus at West Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
LAFD said the collision happened around 5 p.m. and prompted a large emergency response, with dozens of firefighters and police officers sent to the scene. Air video showed an SUV, believed to be a Ford, embedded in the left side of the bus, leaving a large hole in the vehicle.
Urban Search and Rescue crews worked to free passengers trapped inside the bus and a victim pinned beneath the vehicle. Authorities confirmed deaths at the scene and said at least six injured people were taken to nearby hospitals. Officials initially reported two fatalities, but that number later rose to three.
The intersection was shut down as investigators and cleanup crews worked the scene. The Los Angeles mayor’s crisis response team also responded. Police and fire officials are investigating the cause of the crash.
