A New Hampshire man returned a magazine to Concord Public Library that had been overdue for 132 years, and the library waived more than $12,000 in fines because of its temporary fine freeze.

The item was a September 1894 issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which the library said was 48,220 days late. The borrower, identified as John, said he learned about the library’s fine freeze through the Concord Monitor and decided to bring it back, though he did not know how the magazine ended up in his home.

Without the fine waiver, the overdue charges would have totaled $12,055. Library officials said they expected some long-overdue returns but never imagined a publication from the late 19th century would come back.

Because of its age, the magazine will not be returned to circulation. Instead, the library plans to store it in the Concord Room, a preservation space for archival materials.
