A Carnival Cruise Line passenger fell into the ocean from the Carnival Panorama as the ship was returning to Long Beach from Mexico, prompting an emergency response and search effort.
According to the cruise line, the incident happened on the final day of a seven-day voyage from Puerto Vallarta. After crew members were alerted that a male passenger was missing, the ship launched an onboard search and investigation. Video from security cameras later confirmed that the passenger had gone overboard.
Passengers were briefly ordered to remain in their cabins for about an hour while the ship was under lockdown. The order was lifted once the overboard incident was confirmed.
Carnival said in a Sunday morning statement that it immediately notified the U.S. and Mexican coast guards and requested search and rescue assistance. The cruise line said it is providing support to the family and that the cause and circumstances of the fall remain under investigation.
