A Waymo autonomous rideshare vehicle was badly damaged in a suspected hit-and-run crash early Monday in Los Angeles, according to local reports. The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. at West Pico Boulevard and South Union Avenue.
Video from the scene showed severe damage to the vehicle’s left-side doors and lower body. Investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department were seen processing the scene, where bumper debris believed to be from the other vehicle was left nearby.
Some witnesses said two vehicles may have struck the Waymo in succession, but police have not confirmed that account. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was inside the vehicle at the time or whether there were any injuries.
Police are using evidence from the scene to try to identify the hit-and-run vehicle and determine exactly what happened.
