Pomona Police Sergeant Identified in Chino DUI Hit-and-Run Crash

A Pomona police sergeant has been identified as the driver in a July 26 DUI hit-and-run crash in Chino that injured a woman driving to pick up In-N-Out for her family. The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. on Monte Vista Avenue, according to reports cited by local television stations.

Authorities identified the suspect as Richard Aguiar, 50, a detective bureau sergeant with the Pomona Police Department. A police report cited by KTLA said Aguiar was off duty and had a blood-alcohol level more than three times California’s legal limit of 0.08%.

Investigators said the crash began when Aguiar hit a stopped vehicle at a Chino intersection and kept going. He then drove south on Monte Vista Avenue, where he struck a Ford Fusion driven by Kaya, causing her car to hit a tree and suffer serious injuries, according to the report and statements from her family. Her uncle, Troy Tines, told KTLA that she had been out buying burgers for her family when the crash happened.

The report said Aguiar’s Chevrolet truck ultimately hit a tree and came to a stop, and he was found at the scene. The case has been referred to the San Bernardino County district attorney’s office for possible charges, while the Pomona Police Department said the matter is being handled as an internal personnel issue.
