Two people were killed late Friday night when gunfire broke out during a private party at the Artist Lounge in a Northridge strip mall near Cal State Northridge, Los Angeles police said. The victims were a man and a woman, both believed to be between 18 and 25 years old.
Police said officers responded to reports of a large party at the second-floor venue on Nordhoff Street near Reseda Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m. and told organizers to stop the event. Minutes later, shots were fired inside the space, sending attendees scrambling for cover. Video from the scene showed dancers and partygoers dropping to the floor as people shouted for everyone to leave.
A witness who asked not to be named said a man pulled a gun from his waistband and fired at one person, then turned and shot again, striking another person behind him. Police also said a possible third victim may have left the scene after being wounded, and investigators were still searching for that person.
No arrest had been announced, and the suspect remained at large. The shooting unfolded near a major apartment and retail area serving the CSUN community, drawing a large police response and leaving the neighborhood shaken.
