“감시국가 반대” 외친 LA 진보진영, 팔란티어·피터 틸에 분노 쏟아져

13일(현지시간) 미국 캘리포니아주 웨스트할리우드 W Sunset Blvd와 Doheny Rd 교차로에 위치한 팔란티어(Thiel Capital) 사무실 앞에서 대규모 항의 시위가 벌어졌다.
LA지부 민주사회주의자들(DSA LA)이 주도한 이번 시위는 피터 틸이 공동창업한 데이터 분석 기업 팔란티어가 미국 경찰(LAPD), 이민세관단속국(ICE), 미군 등에 감시 및 추적 기술을 제공하고 있다는 점을 강력 규탄하는 자리였다.
DSA LA는 블루스카이 등 SNS를 통해 “피터 틸은 LAPD, ICE, 미군에 악질적인 감시 도구를 공급해 이민자 가족을 분리하고, 이민자들을 공포에 떨게 하며, 미국 내 모든 사람(시민·비시민 포함)을 감시할 수 있는 데이터베이스 구축을 돕고 있다”고 비판했다.
현장에는 수십 명의 시위대가 모여 “팔란티어는 감시국가의 심장”, “피터 틸은 이민자 탄압의 공범” 등의 구호를 외치며 피켓 시위를 벌였다.
현장 영상이 SNS와 시민 안전 앱을 통해 실시간으로 확산되면서, 해당 지역을 지나는 시민들에게 주의가 당부됐다. 일부 시위대는 사무실 건물 내부까지 진입한 것으로 전해졌다.
팔란티어는 트럼프 행정부 시절부터 정부 기관과의 협력을 확대해왔으며, 특히 ICE와의 계약을 통해 이민자 추적 및 대규모 단속에 핵심 역할을 해왔다는 비판을 받고 있다.
최근에는 연방정부의 데이터 통합 프로젝트에도 참여, 미국 내 모든 시민의 개인정보를 통합·분석할 수 있는 기반을 제공하고 있다는 우려가 커지고 있다4.
피터 틸과 팔란티어를 겨냥한 시위는 이번이 처음이 아니다. 샌프란시스코, 팔로알토, 런던 등지에서도 팔란티어의 감시 기술과 이스라엘·미군 등과의 협력에 반대하는 시위가 이어져왔다.
