LA 경찰 노조 “폭력 시 강경 진압”…뉴섬 주지사에 ‘직격탄’

로스앤젤레스 경찰 노조가 최근 불거진 반-이민세관단속국(ICE) 시위와 관련해 폭력 사태에 단호히 대응하겠다고 경고했다. 제이미 맥브라이드 LA경찰보호연맹(LAPPL) 회장은 “평화적 시위가 아닌 폭력 행위에는 즉각 구속과 필요한 강제력을 행사할 것”이라며 “폭력·경찰 폭행 등 범죄행위는 절대 용납하지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.

맥브라이드 회장은 최근 체포된 불법체류 범죄자들로 촉발된 시위에 대해 “경찰은 잘 버티고 있지만, 도시 질서를 해치는 행위엔 강경하게 대응할 것”이라며 “어른이 어리석은 행동을 하면 그에 따른 결과(구속)를 감수해야 한다. 필요하다면 합당한 물리력도 사용할 것”이라고 강조했다.

또한 그는 “새로 부임한 네이선 호크먼 LA카운티 검사장은 전임자(조지 개스콘)와 달리 강경한 범죄 대응 의지를 보이고 있다”며 “폭력 시위로 체포되면 최대한 엄정하게 기소될 것”이라고 자신했다.

특히 맥브라이드는 개빈 뉴섬 주지사를 강도 높게 비판했다. 그는 “뉴섬 주지사는 연방정부의 지원(국방경비대·해병대 투입)을 거부하며, 높은 세금과 범죄율을 방치하고 있다.

2028년 대선을 준비하며 이미지를 바꾸려 하지만, 오히려 사태를 악화시키는 ‘불쏘시개’ 역할을 하고 있다”고 말했다.

LA시 카렌 배스 시장에 대해서도 “지금 상황을 제대로 통제하지 못하고 있다. 필요하다면 대통령에게 지원을 요청해야 한다”며 “이번 주말 추가 폭력 사태가 우려된다. 시는 즉각적인 대응과 상호지원 요청에 나서야 한다”고 주문했다.

이에 대해 뉴섬 주지사 측 대변인은 “최근 몇 년간 캘리포니아의 강력범죄·재산범죄는 감소 추세이고, 타 주에 비해 살인율도 낮다. 세금 역시 전국 평균 수준”이라고 반박했다.

한편, 최근 ICE의 대대적 단속과 연방정부의 군 병력 투입에 대해, 배스 시장과 뉴섬 주지사는 “시민 불안과 혼란만 키운다”며 강하게 반발하고 있다.
